Closing the Expectation Gap: A Free Sermon Series + Group Study

Closing the Expectation Gap: A Free Sermon Series + Group Study

Have you ever found yourself thinking:

“I know God loves me… so why can’t I feel it?”
Or maybe, “If God is really with me, why does He seem so far away?”

You’re not alone.

So many of us live in the tension between what we believe about God and what we actually experience in our everyday lives. We believe He’s near. We believe He’s good. We believe we’re growing.

And yet… we don’t always feel it.

That space between belief and lived experience is what The Expectation Gap names so clearly—and now you can explore it more deeply through two completely free resources: a six-week sermon series and a four-part group study.

The Free Six-Week Sermon Series

Built around the core message of The Expectation Gap, this sermon series helps people move from conceptual belief to embodied faith.

Whether you’re a pastor, small-group leader, ministry team member, or simply someone hungry for something more grounded and authentic, this series gives you tools to lead meaningful conversations about the gap we all experience.

In this series, you’ll help people:

  • Identify and release unhelpful spiritual patterns
  • Quiet the relentless inner critic
  • Rest and relax into God’s presence
  • Experience freedom from the pressure to “get it right”
  • Recognize hidden expectations shaping their faith

Each week includes:

  • A fully editable sermon manuscript
  • Practical teaching rooted in Scripture
  • Reflection prompts and discussion questions
  • Tools designed for honest, real growth

It’s structured for churches—but just as powerful for small groups or individual study.

The Free 4-Part Group Study

Sometimes sermons open the door—but smaller conversations are where transformation deepens.

This four-part study was created to help individuals and groups sit in the tension together.

Most of us believe certain things about God… and then real life happens.

We believe God loves us, but we don’t always feel it.
We believe God is with us, but we don’t always see it.
We believe we should be further along by now, but we still feel stuck.

And in that space between belief and experience, something rushes in to fill the gap—usually shame, fear, or expectations we were never meant to carry.

In this study, Steve gives language to those gaps and helps us notice the stories we tell ourselves when life doesn’t line up with what we expected. More importantly, he points us toward the God who meets us right there.

Together, you’ll explore how to:

  • Quiet unhelpful internal voices
  • Let go of God-sized pressure
  • Rethink what progress really looks like
  • Discover a life marked by peace and wholeness

It’s honest. Practical. Deeply freeing.

Meet the Author

Steve Cuss is the founder of Capable Life and author of Managing Leadership Anxiety and The Expectation Gap. After decades of pastoring, counseling, and equipping leaders around the world, Steve brings a rare blend of biblical depth and emotional honesty.

His work consistently invites people to slow down, notice what’s happening beneath the surface, and experience God—not just believe the right things about Him.

What You’ll Explore

Across the sermon series and study, you’ll wrestle with questions like:

  • “I believe God is with me… but I can’t see Him.”
  • “I believe God loves me… but I don’t feel it.”
  • “I thought I’d be further along by now.”

You’ll learn to notice hidden expectations, challenge the false narratives they create, and encounter God’s presence in fresh, grounded ways.
