Helping Others Intensive
Share
Many people learn tools for their own growth. Fewer people learn the skills required to help someone else grow.
Whether you’re a leader, coach, counselor, pastor, or manager, you’ve likely experienced the moment when someone brings you something difficult—a conflict, a pattern they can’t break, or a place they feel stuck. In those moments, the most important question becomes:
How do you help someone explore what is really going on inside them?
The Capable Life Helping Others Intensive, taking place Aug 17–21, is designed to answer that question.
While our typical Capable Life intensives focus on personal growth tools, this intensive peels back the curtain on how our trainers and coaches actually do the work of helping others. It is a deep dive into the posture, practices, and group dynamics that make transformation possible.
At its core, this intensive focuses on three essential skills.
1. The Skill of Disarming Someone
Real growth only happens when a person feels safe enough to be honest.
One of the most powerful skills a leader can develop is the ability to disarm someone—to create an environment where a person can slow down, be fully themselves, and explore difficult parts of their story or behavior.
During this intensive we explore:
- What is happening inside someone’s nervous system when they are trying to change a behavior or assumption
- Why people naturally resist change, even when they want it
- How coping strategies and protective mechanisms show up in conversations
- How a leader’s posture, curiosity, and presence either open or close the door to honest exploration
- The deeper theology of change—what is happening inside a person as they confront their assumptions and beliefs
You will learn how to notice what is happening beneath the surface of a conversation and how to create the kind of space where meaningful reflection can occur.
2. The Power of Cohorts
Transformation rarely happens in isolation.
At Capable Life, we believe well-led cohorts catalyze growth in ways that individual learning cannot. When peers learn to listen well, ask thoughtful questions, and reflect honestly, something powerful happens.
In this intensive we will show you:
- Why group work often accelerates personal insight
- The structure of effective cohorts
- What to watch for as a facilitator
- How to help peers support and challenge each other well
You’ll also experience this dynamic firsthand, because the intensive itself is structured around cohort learning.
3. Two Powerful Tools: Genograms and Verbatims
Two of the most powerful tools we use in cohorts are genograms and verbatims.
Both tools help people slow down and carefully examine patterns in relationships, conversations, and assumptions.
During the intensive:
- Each participant will present either a genogram or a verbatim
- You will also facilitate a peer’s genogram or verbatim
- Our trainers will come alongside you to guide the process so you can practice the skill of facilitating
This is not just theory—you will actively learn by doing.
Genograms
A genogram maps family relationships across generations to help identify patterns that influence how we think, relate, and respond today.
Verbatims
A verbatim is a detailed reconstruction of a conversation that helps uncover what was happening internally and relationally in the moment.
As we get closer to the intensive, we’ll ask which of these you would like to present.
Participants can also prepare by watching the instructional lessons available on the Capable Life dashboard:
- How to Create a Verbatim (inside the Breaking Stuck Patterns In You course)
- How to Create a Genogram (inside the Family of Origin Dynamics course)
Who This Intensive Is For
The Helping Others Intensive is particularly helpful for:
- People already well-versed in Capable Life tools
- Leaders who regularly walk with others through difficult conversations
- Executives or managers responsible for developing people
- Coaches, counselors, pastors, or facilitators who want to grow in the craft of helping others
If you’ve ever wondered:
- What is actually happening inside someone when they try to change?
- How do I create a space where someone can look honestly at themselves?
- How do I lead a group so that peers help each other grow?
Then this intensive is designed for you.
If you regularly find yourself sitting with people in difficult moments—helping them sort through conflict, stuck patterns, or confusing emotions—you know how meaningful and delicate that work can be.
The Helping Others Intensive (August 17–21) is designed to strengthen that craft. Over five days you’ll learn alongside other thoughtful leaders while practicing the skills that help people slow down, reflect honestly, and grow. Click here here for more information
